the shortest day....

love, love, love winter solstice. today was just beautiful as well which really makes it awesome! finally got my butt moving this morning and took the dogs out to north bivouac for a loop of gasline-powerline-tank. was hoping to see denali as it was lovely in anchorage and frequently you can spy the big mountain through the winter more than in the summer. looked pretty cloudy out denali way though so no sightings. no matter. i headed out to potters marsh post walk as i could tell it would be lovely out there. wish i would have loaded up the kicksled...got it out of the shed and it's sitting behind the gate waiting to be loaded up. dang!! the ice at potters looks great for skating!loved the train bits sitting out there in the sunset.don't have much to say tonight so hopefully these sunset photos are enough to entertain. not sure many actually read the words anyway, which is fine. i tend to ramble alot.perfect ice out there! probably alot look same/similar but i get snap happy when it's pretty and none of them seem like throw aways. there were a few out there enjoying the skating. i was green with envy. okay not too green, but green enough. no jury duty again tomorrow. they didn't request anyone from our group. hoping for the same tomorrow. then that will be done for a bit. my civic duty. they pull the names in alaska from the permanent fund account. you want the money you make yourself available for jury duty. not that i'm opposed to it, like i said, it's the start time that scares me. i remember being very unimpressed when a guy i was interested in mentioned that he didn't register to vote in the state i previously lived in as he didn't want jury duty and in that state they pulled the juries from the vote registrar. i mean what idiot gives up thier right to vote to avoid jury duty. many people fought hard in this country to give us a right to vote. i don't take it lightly and get annoyed when people just blow it off. most do not vote though which is sad. so many people we share this earth with still have no rights in thier nations, they would be thrilled to be able to vote in a fair and safe election. this guy was a parent. seems like if you are a parent you have even more cause to be involved a bit and get out and vote. watched the classic movie of my generation, " a christmas story". always a fun flick. they tend to play it all day sometime around christmas eve or day, but since i'll be working i doubt i'll be doing much besides sleeping and walking the pups between shifts.probably should have gotten out and wandered about looking at christmas lights today. next year.there is that train again.as i drove further towards girdwood the sun went behind the mountains. i turned around.there are a few iceskaters out there on potters. i guess it was my other picture that showed one of them had thier kicksled out there. no matter. even though it's solstice there is still loads of winter left.my turnaround point.more train. there was a smart guy who got out and wandered closer in with his camera. didn't want to crowd him. several folks out there enjoying the day and taking pictures of this amazing sunset. these were taken between 2-3 pm i believe.my fingernails are growing like crazy, i think that is a sign of good health. seems like i have to trim them more often whereas before they always just seemed to crack off and break. still have never had a manicure or pedicure. the tracks are much more busy during tourist season. mt susitna (sleeping lady) is off in the distance. rio was a bit hesitant to join us today, but i'm happy she did finally get off that couch. she seems to be doing pretty well after her rough week. such a sweet pup. she is snoring happily on her bed in the office here. she follows me all over the place at home. just a few from todays walk.me again in one of those giant bulbs on the tank trail. so festive!not too much cool ice, but this was okay.blossom enjoys the sunshine on our short day! she enjoys her walks with her dog friends but i think she equally enjoys just being with me and rio. no competition for her toy and she can just play and relax. the malemutes tend to play a bit rougher than she does.one last picture of pogi and miss breezy chatterbug snuggles up together. love when the cats get along.Happy Solstice to all....
